BM Ciudad Real – Chehovski Medvedi 37:34 (16:21) It couldn’t have been better. Thanks to a sensational turn around in skill by the Spanish team in the final 15 minutes of the match, the Spaniards managed to get to the final. The Russians threw it all away in the 52nd minutes and didn’t seem to care anymore, even though they had worked hard right up to that point. The Spaniards treated the spectators in the Köln arena to a true handball festival with handball at its best. The goalkeeper Arpad Sterbik, who’s skill bought him the title of World Handball Player of the Year, nailed shut his goal and on the other side of the court, Coach Talant Dujshebaev, made it serious business and within a space of five minutes turned the game around from 31:31 to 36:31. The best right wing in the world Mirza Dzombva started it off brilliantly with two perfect goals of sheer skill, so after 55 minutes, the game was over ands the Russians could go home. Medvedi did get off to a good start and were very effective in attack. The aggressive defence went down a treat and the outsider was suddenly leading by 9:14. The physically strong middle block just couldn’t be beaten. It was handball out of the text book which shocked the Spaniards. The brilliant shooter Alexey Rastvortsev and playmaker Vitaly Ivanov made the defence of the Spaniards look pretty poor. That didn’t change in the first 10 minutes of the second half either. The best handball was definitely offered by Medvedi up to that point but then at the left wing, Timur Dibirov gave up a major opportunity, and then when Sirahei Rutenka injuried himself everything seemed to be over. But then the current Champions League winner was impressive and you could see why experts think that they are the best club in the world and then Medvedi went downhill because there just weren’t enough good players left on the bench. Ciudad Real however bought in some fresh legs and showed us what they are made of Coaches: Vladimir Maximov (Chehovski Medvedi): It is very difficult to play against Ciudad. We showed about 60 – 80 % of what we can do. We just didn’t have enough matches. The game was of a high quality and it was a big experience for us. Raul Gonzales (Ciudad Real): We had problems getting into the match. The defence of the Russians was good and we had problems throughout the first half. After the break, our defence was The official Statistics of the game |
